They had apparently been disturbed during the building of lewes railway line.

I live not far from Castle Acre, de Warren's and gundreda Norfolk home. I recently visited the castle and priory(the first clunic priory in UK)

It's very unspoilt, linked to the outside world by a single track road.
There is a gate leading into the most beautiful little village and more than a few stones left of the house and moat.

The priory is breathtaking. Part of it has the de Warren checker Flint and brick, which you see a lot on older churches in Norfolk and Suffolk. Hardly surprising as the family were church law advisors until Henry the 8th sacked the monistries.

My family line then changed it's name somewhat, either through necessity or illiteracy.

My great grandmother always said we were frenchies, hailed from Yarmouth. There were ten hughons and one of them was a Gérard.

She also had two medieval pots with ugly frog faces from the time of the plague. We still have them.

Glad I worked out where our weird name came from. Guymors, goymour, gimmers and gammers inhabit Norfolk and I guess the local accent added to confusion amongst church recorders. I think that may make us 4th cousins.
Your history of John James Smith has been very helpful to me as I am trying to write some family history. I knew that my grandfather Charles King Smith purchased the Golden Valley Paper Mill in about 1903 and I visited him and the mill as a young boy (I was born in 1940 and so was about 18 years younger than Dick and only met him at a few family functions). Your article was most helpful in describing earlier generations, such as the older Charles (my great grandfather) you talk about. It seems that paper making had been in the family for many generations including the earlier John James Smith.
I have a family tree mainly constructed by Dick which I could send if you were interested. You could contact me at
ewen.king.smith@gmail.com
With thanks and best wishes,
Ewen King-SmithAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6213214691888541544.post-49462289874836191282023-01-19T13:39:29.741+00:002023-01-19T13:39:29.741+00:00hi, I'm just doing some family research and I ...hi, I'm just doing some family research and I think we may be cousins - though not sure how many times as Leonard - who fought with Harold was my 26x G' Grandfather shulliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16716640151002789278noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6213214691888541544.post-82678520405521421982023-01-01T19:34:59.827+00:002023-01-01T19:34:59.827+00:00thankyou for putting up this postit was very inter...thankyou for putting up this postit was very interesting reading I myself was born in Ayr in 1954 and I'm very grateful to be reading about our history of Ayr its a sad story about Hugh piper and I used to listen to stories about the trans in Ayr from my mother I love hearing about our town of Ayr Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6213214691888541544.post-30398151770916648232022-12-17T18:53:39.725+00:002022-12-17T18:53:39.725+00:00Most interesting!
